The Journey of my life. From 325 lbs. to the Man I am today.

My name is Shad McGaha and this web site is the story of how I transformed from a grossly overweight man into an endurance Athlete.  For the first 30 years of my life I was a couch potato.  Now I have lost over 140lbs and I have competed in 17 endurance events.

My Goal is to run a combination of 40 Marathons or 1/2 Marathons  by the time I am 40 years old.

A little background.

I am 35 years old.  I have been married for almost 11 years and I have three great kids.  Alex is 13, Emma is 6 and Henry is 2.

Sometime in the early fall of 2005 I went to the Doctor for a check-up, after a close friend of mine lost someone very special to her, I felt the need to get checked out.  I have been to the Dr tons of times and he has never mentioned my weight or having high blood pressure.  I had been overweight all of my life and had never really had  any problems.  He asked me to come back in a few weeks for a follow up after monitoring my blood pressure at home.  At the follow up my blood pressure was still pretty high and he suggested that I needed to lose some weight.  Right off the bat he suggested I have gastric bypass.  My doctor had known me my entire life and he just knew I wouldn’t be able to lose the weight on my own.   I looked at my wife and right then and there I decided that I could do it myself.

We left the Doctors office and bought an elliptical machine. And after a few weeks of dieting and working out on our own we joined Weight Watchers.  After  three or four months of doing Weight Watchers and exercising four to five days a week I had some friends of mine, Rusty Sons and Steve Duffle, approach me about running with them  I explained to them that I had never run a mile in my life and told them I was not ready for that.   They didn’t give up on me.  A month or two more went by and they came to me again and this time I said yes.

The next morning we meet up and we ran two miles then a few days later we ran again and this time we ran 3 miles.  It felt great!  From then on I was hooked they suggested that we all train and run the White Rock Marathon that Dec.  A few discussions later the decision was made that we will follow Hal Higdon's plan for 12 weeks for your first 1/2 Marathon.  That December I did it I ran my first 1/2 Marathon the time was not great and it was not easy but I finished.  And I was really hooked!

Follow my journey here.

Me somewhere close to 325 or better on the day I ask my wife Anne to Marry me. 1999
